About the Medrash Gohova
The high house of learning which is also referred to as “Lakewood’s Yeshiva or BMG” is a Haredi Jewish Lithuaning Yeshiva that is situated in the Township of Lakewood in the state of New Jersey. The institution was founded by Rabbi Aaron Kotler in 1943, it is also the second-largest Yeshiva in the world after the Mir Yeshiva located in Jerusalem.
The statistics as of the year 2019 show that the Yeshiva had approximately 6,715 students, 2,748 were regulars and 3, 967 were in Kollel status. The principal Rosh Yeshiva since 1982 has been Malkiel Kotler.
At the institutions the Talmud and Halakah studies are broken into over 200 groups, each group consists of several students who are mentored by a veteran or scholar, and also each of the groups has its own specific curriculum with an emphasis on individual learning.
The BMG institutions have four campuses that are scattered over 35 acres of land in Lakewood. It also has numerous academic facilities, well-stocked academic facilities, and libraries, and comfortable residence halls. The newest building at the institution was finished in 2015, on the site of where Bais Eliyah (the trailers) used to be.
It was first used on Rosh Hashanah 5776 which accommodated over one thousand people for the services. This building was generously sponsored by Ralph Herzka and Meir Levine. The BMG is licensed by the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education and it was given accreditation by the Association of Advanced Rabbinical and Talmudic Schools. The institution is authorized to grant Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Talmudic.
Curriculum and what to expect at the BMG
The student focus at BMG is to acquire the necessary skills to comprehend and carefully analyze the Talmud and not only do that but go on independent research. Which will in the end transform them into accomplished Talmudic scholars. The curriculum at the BMG is based on classical Torah study traditions using the Talmud, Rishonim, Responsa, and Rabbinic literature as texts and sources.
