Manasquan is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. It is a wonderful town especially for families and it’s located on the Jersey shore. The population of Manasquan, New Jersey, as of the 2010 United States census was at 5,897. There was a decrease in the population as reflected by the 2000 United States census, of which the borough’s population was at 6,310 then.
History
The borough’s name originated from ‘Lenape’, and was derived from ‘menaskunk’ which translates to ‘‘a place to gather grass or reeds’’. There are also stories about Manasquan being derived from ‘’man-a-squaw-han’’ which means the stream of the island of squaws or an island with an enclosure for squaws.There have been many variations in the original pronunciation and spelling of the borough’s name, ranging from ‘’maniquan’’ to ‘’squan’’ and a whole host of others.
The total area of the borough is 2.53 square miles and it has a density of 4,263 per square mile. Manasquan became a borough by an act of the New Jersey legislature on December 30, 1887, from parts of Wall Township as a result of a referendum that was held the day before.
The government body is made up of a council which is headed by the mayor; Edward G. Donovan, until the next election which will be conducted in 2023. The administrator is Thomas Flarity and the municipal clerk is Barbara Illaria who performs statutory duties.
According to the New Jersey monthly magazine, Manasquan ranks as the twenty-second best place to live in New Jersey. This ranking was made as of 2008, and since then, Manasquan has had better improvements and is non-arguably a pleasant place to make your home currently.
