History of Wall Township

Wall Township formally became a township as a result of an act of the New Jersey legislature which was passed alongside the signature of Governor George F. Fort, on the 7th of March, 1851. The inhabitants of this area petitioned and voted for a new unit of governance so there would be a separation from Howell Township. The act of the New Jersey legislature had new boundaries which set Wall Township as all the land from the shark river to the Manasquan River and from the Atlantic Ocean to the new Howell border.

The township was named after a lawyer who commanded a Trenton volunteer company during the war of 1812. His name was General Garret D. Wall. He also served as a clerk of the New Jersey court for five years and as the state’s quartermaster general for over 20 years before he was chosen to represent the state in the United States Senate from 1835 to 1841. Before that, he was offered the position of governor, however, he declined and is noted for being the only man given an appointment for governor who refused to serve.

Wall Township had its first committee meeting on the 11th of March, 1851 at the residence of Isaac Ammerman’s. A moderator was chosen who later on became the first superintendent of schools. Three committee men were also chosen. At the meeting, the first budget was voted upon and was used to set off the funds for the poor with equal money for eight free schools and roads. Funds were also set apart for dog pounds and two-pound keepers.

Over time, Wall Township has become a sought-after community in which residents and visitors have never had a cause to complain.
